Love Monster Week

It's every teacher's favorite week… Valentine's Week! All joking aside, I've decided to take a different approach to having a Valentine's themed week this year. This year we are going to have a “Love Monster” week!

Read Alouds

We are going to start the week with two of my favorite Valentine's Day Read Alouds: Love Monster by Rachel Bright and Crakenstein Valentine by Samantha Berger.

I love the idea of building my week around these two books because a “love monster” theme can be fun for both girls AND boys! They both provide a fun twist on books about love, while providing excellent comprehension and extension opportunities. Two of my biggest activities are going to be from my Love Monster book study unit (seen below).

We are going to:
1) Write a descriptive writing about the Love Monster using {adjectives}, identify how the character feels {TEKS 1.9b} and tell how we would make the Love Monster feel loved!
2) Write a letter {TEKS 1.19b} to the Love Monster to try and cheer him up and make him feel loved.
I chose these two writing activities because the students will be writing about the same text, but they will have to write in two completely different genres.

Math Review

To get some extra math practice in this week, we are going to be using my “Math is Sweet” Math Centers. This set includes missing subtrahends to 10, missing addends to 20 and ten more and ten less to 100.
Get it {here} ON SALE through the end of the week.

Crafting Time

We started this Love Monster crafting project last year and my class LOVED it. The Dollar Tree has foam heart stickers (100 in a bag) for $1 each. They are GREAT for the feet, eyes and antennas.
