Back to School Science for First Grade

I am so excited to be sharing my favorite back to school science units to teach in First Grade with you: Weather Types and Conditions and Objects in the Sky such as the moon, stars and sun.

You all know that time of year… you are worried about meet the teacher, establishing rules and procedures and so much more!

It's hard to stay organized, planned, prepped and on top of things.

I'll let you in on my secret:

NO PREP SCIENCE UNITS!!

I love these because they provide a lot of great opportunities for:

  • cut and paste instruction (YES, we go cut by cut and glue by glue so students know what I expect from them)
  • guided writing opportunities where students can simply label or get more advanced with longer sentences
  • PLENTY of opportunities to align your daily read aloud with your science and writing block to create a great theme week

Weather Types and Conditions

Ok, weather has always been and probably always will be one of the easiest back to school science units to teach in first grade.

Weather is something students are familiar with and can easily relate to.

That means I can use this no prep unit to focus less on the science content and more on the procedures I want students to use when doing these no prep activities.

All of my science units use very similar, so I always take a few weeks to really focus on HOW to complete this activities so that they can complete them independently throughout the rest of the school year.

Objects in the Sky

Ok, this is not only a back to school favorite to teach in Elementary, its an all year favorite science unit of mine because it is SO fun!

Objects in the Sky includes Daytime v. Nighttime including the Sun, Moon and Stars. Students love to draw things that they see in daytime and nighttime and I especially love having them do creative writing projects like “If I Were an Astronaut”.

Again, creative writing is SO important because it allows students to summarize what they have learned, but do it in a non-traditional, fun way!

Here's what other teachers are saying about this unit:

"We don't have a lot of time in our schedule for science but this resource made it easy for students to have a quick lesson and comprehend the skills."
