First Grade Science Activities

Do you need a super easy to plan, low prep activities for First Grade science?

Teaching science in the primary and elementary grades can be difficult, especially if you get into a time crunch, which let’s be honest is just about every day!

In my own first grade classroom, I spend the majority of my time planning and teaching reading and that leaves me very LITTLE time to plan and teach science.

Does this sound familiar?

Well, I’ve got the solution you need! I’ve created easy to plan, low prep science units that are both engaging and interactive!

Because every product in this bundle follows one of three outlines, I spend very little time explaining the format of our activities and we are able to jump right into the content of our lessons.

A second benefit of these resources is the ease of leaving them for a substitute teacher. These resources are easy to teach and guide students through because the students are already familiar with the formats.

Here is how they work!

Each of my science products follow the same basic framework:

  • Vocabulary Cards and/or Real Photographs
  • Skills Worksheets
  • Writing Activities
  • Interactive Journals

First Grade Science Vocabulary and Schema

On Monday, I introduce the vocabulary for the unit with these SUPER SIMPLE VOCAB CARDS and real photographs like the ones seen in Rocks, Soil and Water,  Force, Motion and Magnets, Light, Sound and Heat.

Then, we start adding to our INTERACTIVE ANCHOR CHART about what we already know about the subject. We continue to add to it throughout the week. Pre-writing sentence stems is a HUGE time saver!! By the way, check out that “boo-boo” tape! Extra labels to the rescue!

Click and Print Resources

The rest of the week’s lessons are filled with these super simple, yet very purposeful CLICK AND PRINT RESOURCES that I designed to match the 1st grade standards (TEKS in Texas). Activities range from fact recording, writing, labeling, interactive journals and creative writing, as shown below in Objects in the Sky and Weather Types and Tools

First Grade Science Journal

Finally, in an effort to keep science going, even when we are short on time, I added a SCIENCE INTEREST JOURNAL to our writing center during guided reading stations. Students can write about anything and everything science related. It is really amazing some of the things that they have come up with!

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills

All of these products have been aligned with the 1st Grade Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, which are the standards we teach in Texas.

Check out the alignment here:
