Weather Activities for First Grade

Weather activities with my First Grade students is one of my favorite ways to start the school year.

I love this unit because students understand weather and have a good understanding of it. Weather is something that affects their day to day lives.

They know what a sunny day or a rainy day or a cloud day feels like. They also know that the weather affects what kind of activities they can do outside on those different kinds of weather conditions.

What kids may not understand or consider is that the weather affects different jobs.

Construction workers need sunny days to work and farmers need rainy days to make their crops grow.

Learning the Facts using Weather Activities

I think it is so important for Elementary students (especially at the beginning of the year) to have vocabulary instruction with visual support!

Weather conditions are something that most Elementary students know about, but they don't always know what types of tools are used to measure the weather.

I like to do a mixture of activities from worksheet word banks to interactive journals were students can really use their own creativity.

In fact, I rely heavily on these interactive journal activities as “independent work time” so that I can steal 3-4 students for some extra reading or math intervention!

Real Life Examples

On day 2 or 3, depending on your schedule, we start tracking the weather.

I call this more “guided practice”, where I'm still leading most of the activity, but students are offering up their opinions.

We do these activities mostly together as a class, but I may stop 75% of the way through and let students finish on their own for independent practice.

I like that this activity includes a word bank with visual pictures!
