Veteran's Day can be a difficult holiday to teach to First Grade students. Of course, I always wanted to honor all of the brave men and women who have served, but I struggled to find an age approriate way to celebrate Veteran's day with my students.
A super great way to celebrate this holiday with students is to start by teaching them the different branches of the military.
This is a fun way to teach students the basis of the holiday with facts that are important for them to know, even in First Grade.
This is also a great time to talk about character traits and what character traits that a Veteran would have to have. We talk about how Veterans have to be brave, strong, intelligent and how they truly care about the people they are protecting.
Veteran's Day Activities for First Grade
I love to use cut and paste activities with my students to help review what they have learned about Veteran's Day. Plus, my first graders always love to see the different uniforms that each branch of the military wears!
These activities are my favorite because they can be done quickly and do not take up a lot of your classroom time.
History of Veteran's Day
We also talk about the history of Veteran's Day. Veteran's Day was made an official holiday by President Woodrow Wilson on the 11th day of the 11th month. It is a day to honor all of the members of the military, both past and present.
