Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Activities for First Grade

Forgetting about Mother’s Day and Father’s Day or spending hours on a craft can be the worst!

Some years you may remember to plan Mother’s Day and Father’s Day activities with PLENTY of time for full writing projects. Other years, you may have students draw a picture on a blank piece of paper…

but not anymore!

I’ve created a variety of activities to meet all of your Mother’s Day and Father’s Day needs:

Writing, Drawing, Cards and more!

All activities are click and print which means NO PREP for you!

Celebrating Mother's Day and Father's Day in First Grade

Mother's Day and Father's Day are such fun holidays to celebrate with first grade students!

This is a wonderful time to talk about:

  • why we are thankful for them
  • reasons we love them
  • things they do for us
  • memories we share with them/places we've been

Depending on how much time you have, this is a great topic for your students to write about!

I usually start with some sort of writing web that we brainstorm ideas together as a class.

Then, I have the students write about their moms and dads.

They can write about what they look like, what they like to do, memories and why they love them. Those four ideas alone could create a four page booklet!

If you are looking for a faster and easier activity, interviews are an excellent (and usually hilarious) activity that are always a big hit with parents!

It allows their student to create something unique and personal to their relationship, but can be done quickly and easily!

Celebrating Different Family Members

Some of our first grade students have unique living situations and might not be able to celebrate “mother's” day or “father's” day in the traditional sense.

So I made sure to make these activities open to work for all family members!

You can see on the left how you can do this activity for an aunt/uncle, sister/brother grandmother/grandfather or any other family friend!

I think this is such an important consideration because you don't want any students to feel left out during Mother's Day and Father's Day.

This is also a great opportunity to discuss how every family looks different but they are all equally important.
